The Maltese Practice of appending Surnames
(The Use of long Surnames) and their application in Maltese Heraldry
'Any man has had countless myriads of ancestors and among
them any number of rich men and beggars, kings and slaves, Greeks and barbarians' . (Plato)
PATRONYMS:
In this section we identify the "root" family name of certain
Maltese whose surnames have been published as one appending another.
It is a settled rule of heraldry and genealogy that the root means the
family name of the father's father's father etc etc. This is called the patronymic.
Until recently, to append a maternal ancestor’s surname was unlawful.
In the lovely document titled "Correspondence
and Report of the Commission appointed to enquire into the claims and grievances
of the Maltese Nobility, May 1878, presented to both Houses of Parliament by
Command of Her Majesty (C.-2033.)", we find the Commissioners quietly
rebuking certain individuals for using surnames to which they were not
entitled, e.g. the Barone di Castel
Cicciano who unsuccessfully claimed the other titles of Barone della Marsa and Barone di Djar el Bniet et Bucana was
first put down by the long and sonorous ‘Alessandro Testaferrata-Sceberras-Damico-Inguanez’,
but the Commissioners corrected this to read by his lawful patronymic, to wit ‘Alessandro
Sceberras’.
Similarly, the Commissioners shortened the surname of the Barone della Tabria from ‘Testaferrata-Viani’
to ‘Testaferrata’ which was the Barone’s
lawful surname in the male line; and the surname of the Barone di Ghariescem et Tabia Gio Francesco ‘Sant-Cassia’
was shorted to ‘Sant’ and the Commissioners deliberately emphasized
their point by stating that the “family
name Cassia will not be appended to the latter title”.
Matters turned around in the last part of their report, where the
Commissioners conceded a reason why surnames may be appended to the lawful
patronymic, namely “apparently to show
their connection with families on which a title of nobility was originally
conferred, or to indicate the possession of lands (‘primogeniture’) entailed by
persons who bore such surnames”, or for the simple expedient of “distinguishing the different branches of the
same family”, observing that this expedient is resorted to by many members
of the nobility.
PROBLEMS CAUSED
BY USE OF MATERNAL SURNAMES:
The practice of appending a surname often blurs the social and heraldic
association between the holder of that composite surname and his patronymic.
Nowadays, it is not a difficult task to adopt a totally new surname
thereby breaking off all connections with the root surname. This practice
should have no place in the studies of genealogy and heraldry because it
confounds the purpose of those sciences.
PRESENT-DAY SCIENTIFIC RECOGNITION OF IMPORTANCE OF ‘ROOT
SURNAME’:
Our puritan view is shared by modern DNA testing which examines Y
chromosomal DNA (Y DNA for short) which is passed on from father to son. Each son receives DNA for his Y
chromosome from his father. This
DNA is not mixed with that of the mother, and it is identical to that of the
father, unless a mutation occurs. Starting with the living donor of Y DNA, the
genetic information is inherited from the donor's father, from that man's
father, and so on, up the male line.
It is a scientific fact that two brothers would carry this same Y DNA,
as would two first cousins who were the sons of brothers, or a nephew and his
paternal uncle. In most Western
cultures, these men should all have the same surname. The Y DNA thus becomes a genetic label for the surname. Comparison with other men with the same
surname could confirm whether they had a common ancestor. Y DNA within such a
family group may not match, because of what are delicately called "non-paternal
events."
There are three causes for such events. (1) An adopted individual would carry the surname of his new
family but the Y DNA of his birth father, (2) An individual who chooses to
change his name would bequeath his new surname to a son along with the Y DNA of
his father, who carried the original surname and (3) Finally, as the result of
illegitimacy a son will carry the surname of the cuckolded husband of his
mother (or the surname of his unmarried mother) but his DNA is that of his
genetic father.
Often the first two causes can be anticipated through research of
historical or family records. In regard to the second cause, we find a number
of incidences published in Gauci’s books, for example one can establish that
the root surname of the family Mompalao-de-Piro is neither Mompalao nor
de Piro but Mamo; likewise the Y DNA code for the two Cassar-Desain
families is neither Cassar nor Desain but Testaferrata.
In regard to the third cause, Genealogists work on the relative
presumption that no illegitimacy occurred.
APPLICATION OF
‘ROOT SURNAME’ IN HERALDRY:
In the science of Heraldry, mainstream schools of thought maintain that the
paternal shield must be prominently displayed.
There is ample documentary proof going back centuries which associate
certain shields with particular families. Such shields have remained very much
the same, with slight differences that can only be explained away as
application of artistic license. It is therefore relatively easy to identify
the shield most suitable to one’s root surname. Thus like Y DNA testing, the
dominant shield remains a label for the surname. Comparison with other men with
the same dominant shield should indicate whether they had a common ancestor.
Some may argue that because of Malta's old ties with Spain, Spanish rules
allowed one to display the arms of a female ancestor. However, those who
support this view are in the minority, it hardly being relevant that Malta's
ties with Spain formally ended with the last Aragonese King of Sicily.
Therefore, one cannot entertain the possibility of giving greater prominence to
the shield of a female ancestor. It is therefore to be understood that when one
marshals his coat of arms, he should always give first importance to the shield
of his root family name, which is a basic tenet of European heraldry.
An obstacle local to Malta is that there has never been any authority on
heraldry. However, there appears to be a consensus that the coat of arms used
by a Maltese should be ‘suitable’.
"Characteristic of Malta is
allowance for personal freedom by which I mean you can do so you like so long
as you do not encroach on the rights of others. Nowhere is this more clearly
shown than in the use of the coats of arms of the many surnames in Malta. There
are no College of Arms or Heraldry Office in Malta - nor for that matter is the
use of Armorial Bearings a privilege with taxation attached to it. Everyone is
allowed to use a coat of Arms suitable to his surname and no one would dream of
questioning his right to do so" (Leopardi E.R. Malta's Heritage,
Progress press Ltd Malta 1969).
With the above justifications, we are therefore examining the respective
root of many published double-, triple-, quadruple- and even quintible-
surnames in order to establish which component surname would be most suitable
for them when marshalling their respective coats of arms. A table (TABLE 1)
is shown below; all genealogical data was taken from Gauci, C.A. 1981 and 1992.
A case study (Case Study #1) reassessing a published coat of arms
follows. Data is taken from the same source.
DIFFERENCING
OF ARMS:
Characteristic of Maltese heraldry which remains
unregulated, is that there is no use of labels or marks of difference. As seen
in the case studies below, all shields are undifferenced. On the other hand, different
lines of as many Maltese families have evolved over the years resulting in
different appendages to the same surname. With the genealogical data taken from
Gauci’s books, it is therefore a feasible exercise to work out how members of
the same family may marshal their arms differently.
One observation must be made in regard to the so-called “senior” and
“junior” lines of the patrician Testaferrata family: Both lines show a
bull (usually rampant or passant) but the former is described by Gauci as
displaying in fess a demi eagle whilst the latter as having in chief three mullets,
giving the mistaken impression that these are marks of difference; in fact the
demi-eagle represents the right to display the “capo del impero” granted by the Holy Roman Empire to the knightly
line of that family in 1637, whereas the baronial line is reported
to have adopted the chief to commemorate its elevation to that rank in 1710, the
remaining lines (today extinct) could not have displayed either. Why these
distinct augmentations were at some point in time recorded with British heralds as mere
marks of difference may perhaps be explained that the honour relative to the “capo del impero”, namely that of Hereditary
Knight of the Holy Roman Empire, was not recognized by the British Colonial
Government, allowing one to speculate that a well-meaning herald would turn a
Nelson eye allowing the demi-eagle to pass as a mark of difference rather than
an augmentation of honour.
A case study (Case Study #2) identifying the components of a
marshaled shield of different lines of the same family follows. Data is taken
form the source indicated above.

Case Study (#1):
We now reassess a published case: In Gauci's 1992 book Plate 1 shows an
armorial bearing of the Baron of Djar
il-Bniet and of Buqana and
consists of 11 parts, namely Gatto, Murina, Inguanez, Apap, Beccadeli di
Bologna, Sceberras, D'Amico, De Piro, Testaferrata, Castelletti and Dorell.
Looking at the shield as published, would be telling us that it belongs
to a Mr. Gatto-Murina-Inguanez-Apap-Beccadelli-di-Bologna-Sceberras-D'Amico-De-Piro-Testaferrata-Castelletti-Dorell.
However, turning the page we find that the surname of the person to whom
it refers is 'only' Apap-Bologna-Sceberras-D'Amico-Inguanez.
Looking at his genealogy, we find that his paternal surname of Apap-Bologna
is derived from {Apap + [ (Sceberras+Testaferrata)+ [Perdicomati+(Beccadelli+di
Bologna) ] } whilst his maternal surname of de-Piro-D’Amico-Inguanez is
derived from {De-Piro + [(Sceberras+Testaferrata) + Trigona] + [(D'Amico +
Castelletti) + ([(Fiott + Farrugia) + Inguanez)]]}.
Looking at the entry in Gauci's book, the honours claimed are stated to
have derived not from any of the above surnames but through the Inguanez's
descent from Gatto and Murina, that is to say {Inguanez +
(Gatto+[Castelli+Murina]) }.
Finally, it appears that the bearer also wishes to give importance to his
descent from the Dorell family. Looking at the relative genealogy, we
find that the descent is derived on the maternal side from the marriage in 1755
between Pasquale Sceberras-Testaferrata and Lucrezia Dorell-Falzon.
The reassessment is illustrated below:

The reassessed shield now reads Apap-Sceberras-Testaferrata-Perdicomati-Beccadelli-di-Bologna-de-Piro-Sceberras-Testaferrata-Dorell-Falzon-Trigona-D’Amico-Castelletti-Fiott-Farrugia-Inguanez-Gatto-Castelli-Murina.
Case Study (#2):
According to the 1878 Commissioners’ Report, many members of the Maltese
Nobility resorted to appending surnames for the simple expedient of “distinguishing the different branches of the
same family”. This observation comes to the fore when one considers the
different lines of the Carbott, Cassar-Desain, Gauci, Sant, Sceberras and
