*1. Clandestine marriage of Salvatore di Marco and Eugenia Busuttil. According to Frans Ciappara book, "Marriage in Malta in the Late Eighteenth Century (1750 -1800) Associated News (M) Ltd 1988, Malta, pages 25-26 and Appendix A pages 121-123 the following remark was noted.

"A way out of these difficulties which, however, had its own embarressments, was to trick the parish priest in the celebrated style of Renzo and Lucia - of I Promessi Sposi fame. Between 1750 -1800 I have come across 39 cases of such illegal, though valid clandestine marriages. One case concerned Salvatore di Marco, a 20 year old hairdresser of Valletta. He was first engaged to Maria Micallef, whom he then left for Eugenia Busuttil, a washerwomen from the same town. As his first bride's mother would have sued him to make him take her daughter to wife, he planned an ingenious move. One morning, on 26th June 1779, the two lovers surprised the Archpriest of St Paul's Valletta, Fr Pascale Grima, in his confessional. In a high voice the groom said, "This is my wife!", to which Eugenia rejoined, "This is my husband!" She was put under house arrest that same day, while Salvatore was put in the Bishop's prisons. On 10 July proceedings were started against them, and we fined 10 oncie each". Ref: Curiae Episcopalis Melitensae, AO 691, ff. 155r - 164v.

Interesting enough, their son Vincenzo was noted as Alunno di Eugenia Busuttil de Marco, so in fact was Salvatore di Marco's son.
