NICHOLAS DE PIRO D’AMICO INGUANEZ M.O.M., 9th Baron of Budach.

 


Born in St Julian’s, De Piro is the Ninth Baron of Budach, KM. He was
educated at Worth Preparatory School and at Downside, United Kingdom.
De Piro opened Casa Rocca Piccola, originally built in the 16th Century for
Don Pietro La Rocca, a Knight of Malta. Casa Rocca Piccola is the network of
underground passages and tunnels cut out of the rock over its 400 year history.
Marquis De Piro has held various appointments and worked ostensibly to protect the cultural heritage of Malta. He served as a council member of the Poetry Society of Cheltenham; is a founder member of Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, a member of the Committee of Privileges of the Maltese Nobility, rector of the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Rosary; a past Chancellor of the MalteseAssociation of the Order of Malta; and a nominated past member of thegovernment committee of guarantee of Malta’s cultural heritage. He is presently a council member of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts (MCCA).
Marquis De Piro produced a number of publications on historical heritage of Malta including The International Dictionary of Artists who Painted Malta and The Temple of the Knights of Malta. Many of his writings features in the volume Treasures of Malta whilst he contributed with over seventy articles for Malta This Month.

FRANCIS STIVALA dei Marchesi e Baroni de Piro, M.O.M.


Born in Sliema, Francis Stivala read for a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of
Arts (Honours) in Economics and a Master of Science in Mathematics and
Computing at the University of Malta.
Mr Stivala is the pioneer in developing the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) profession and industry in Malta. To date, well over one million international students of all ages have come to Malta to study English. Through his vision,foresight and unceasing involvement, Stivala’s determination became what is now an organised and well established leading segment of Malta’s tourism profile that employs thousands across the various service sectors of the English language stay and contributes no less than €200 million annually to the local economy.
Mr Stivala started to build this venture on professional lines when he was an active student leader within the Student Representative Council (SRC/KSU) just over 40 years ago. He took the Council’s National Student Travel Service (NSTS) to new heights and was instrumental in transforming it into the National
Student Travel Foundation (NSTF). He sought to retain the original
philanthropic character of NSTF as an international educational entity at the
service of all students and youths with a strong corporate social responsibility that consistently awards travel bursaries, runs non-formal educationalprogrammes and extends into the restoration and preservation of Malta’s national heritage.
Throughout his tenure at NSTF,Mr Stivala has made a name for Malta in the
international student and youth educational travel community and among
governmental and international tourism organisations. For over 35 years, he
served as board member and chairman of a multitude of international
associations, federations and trusts where he introduced significant changes
and advancements. Among his current international responsibilities, Mr Stivala is Chairman of the Congress of the World Youth, Student, Educational Travel Confederation which embraces a diverse membership from over 60 countries world-wide.

 

ROSA MICALLEF JUDGE M.Q.R.


Rosa Micallef Judge started her music career in Malta obtaining the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music. She continued her studies as an Associated Board Scholar in Pianoforte and Harp at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
In 1970 she was appointed Hon. Representative in London for the Manoel
Theatre, and was later Chairperson of the Hospital Committee for Maltese
patients undergoing treatment in London. On her return to Malta in 1972, she was appointed Hon. Representative of the Associated Board of the Royal
Schools of Music. She was the first woman member to be appointed on the
Commission for Higher Education under the Darendorf Commission, and
Member of the Council of the MMDNA under Sir Gerald Creasy.
She has been invited by the governments of Italy, France, Turkey, former
Czechoslovakia and Finland to observe the music facilities available in these
countries. She was a member of the Council and Hon. Secretary of the
Community Chest Fund from 1977 to 1994. She is an Associate Board Music
Scholar, an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and an Honorary
Member of the Royal College of Music.
In 1982 she was created Cavaliere dell’Umanità by the Società Internazionale
dell’Unione Cavalleria Cristiana of Italy. In 1993 she was invested Cavaliere
dell’Umanità Marchesa of the Holy Roman Empire whilst in 1994 she as
invested Chevalier dans l’Ordre Des Arts et Des Lettres. In 1998 she was
bestowed as Dame of the Military Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem in the grade of Compatriot of Merit (MMLJ).

 

THOMAS JULIAN CREMONA dei Baroni di Tabria e Gomerino. M.Q.R


Born in 1988, Mr. Thomas Julian Cremona had to undergo treatment for
leukemia at a very tender age. Since the age of 8 years,Mr Cremona has shown apositive disposition to sport and participated in various athletic events on behalf of St. Patrick’s Athletics Club.
Initially, Cremona focused on ‘sprint’ events, then ‘middle-distance’ events
followed by a ‘half-marathon’ and a ‘full-marathon’. Cremona also participated in a few biathlons besides venturing into mountain-bike racing.
Cremona participated in philanthropic events that included swimming from
Gozo to Malta and taking part in the LifeCycle Challenge 2006 to raise funds
for the local renal unit.
A month after he sat for his final session of the ACCA examinations, Cremona
started his Row4Cancer campaign in preparation of his attempt to row across the Atlantic. Concurrently, he strove successfully to break a 20-hour world record on the Concept2 rowing machine. This record was acheived in
Plymouth England. Cremona delivered the 24-hour world record on the
Concept2 Longest Continual Row in Malta on 12 December 2010.
As part of the six-man crew of Sara G, Cremona broke the world record for the ‘fastest Atlantic row in a monohull’ as duly recorded by the Ocean Rowing Society International and the Guinness World Records. The crew rowed 2,753 nautical miles from Tarfaya, Morocco to Barbados, West Indies in 33 days 21 hrs 46 minutes from 5 January to 8 February 2011. They spent 33 days, 21 hours and 46 minutes on the sea.
Mr Cremona is a source of inspiration for youths, particularly those facing difficult moments in their lives, and cancer patients and survivors of this illness.

The marriage took place on 3rd December 2011 at St Augustine's Catholic Church, Balmain, Sydney, Australia between Contessa Cheryl Said daughter of Conte and Contessa Paul and Virginia dei Principe Said and Michael James Nomarhsa, son of Terry and Mary Nomarhas. Fr Conte Mario dei Principe Said (the bride's uncle) and Fr Joe Camilleri officated, The ceremony was witnessed by Leonard Hoh, Contessa Amanada dei Principe Said, Contessa Leila Sammut, Lana Nicolaoi, Krisanthy Roberts, Lisa To, Jim Kolymbis, Mark Bau, Cameron Roberts, Peter To, Flower girls were Matilda Braithwaite and Natasha Sammut, and Page boy by Luke Sammut. The reception was held at Le Montage, Lilyfield, Sydney, then later reception party on a Sydney Harbour cruise.

The couple will honeymoon at Maldives Islands.

CILIA LA CORTE. On November 3, JOHN, widower of Helen, née Zammit Tabona and father of the late Anne Cilia La Corte, aged 77, passed peacefully away at his home in London. He leaves to mourn his loss his sons Mark and his wife Charmaine, and Paul, his brother Victor, in-laws, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral service and cremation were held in London on November 14. A memorial service, followed by the interment of his ashes, will be held at Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery chapel on Thursday at 10 a.m. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

The marriage took place on October 15 at St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Mdina, between KONRAD, son of Mr and Mrs Ramon Xuereb of Santa Luċija, and GRETA, daughter of Conte and Contessa Vincent Borg Carbott of Sliema. Fr Gordon Refalo and Fr Ted Cumbo, the groom’s uncle, officiated. The ceremony was witnessed by Conte Dr David Borg Carbott, the bride’s brother and Dr André Xuereb, the groom’s brother. The bride was attended by her sister, Ms Francesca Borg Carbott and Ms Abigail A. Zammit. Ms Rebekah St John, the groom’s niece, and Mr Luke St John, the groom’s nephew, were flower-girl and pageboy respectively. Architect Kevin Bencini and Dr Giuseppe Simonelli carried out the duties of best men, while Mr Duncan Abela, Mr Karl Aquilina, Mr Joseph St John and Mr Kristoff Zammit Ciantar were ushers. A reception was later held at Villa Corinthia, Attard.

He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Odette née Schembri, his adored children, Edwina and Paul Camilleri, Lucienne and Edwin Gera and Claire, widow of Ray Vella, his dearest grandchildren Erika and David, Matthew and Astride, Gag, Amenia, Emma and Philip, and great-grandchildren Ella, Nina, Luca, Alec and Ines, his sisters Mary Wirth and Nellie Demajo Albanese and his sister-in-law Frances, widow of his brother Edwin, his beloved nephews and nieces, and the community of St Catherine’s Home who cared for him with so much love and dedication. She is deeply mourned by her children Maria, widow of Carmel Micallef, Phyllis and her husband Joseph Cassar Naudi, Doris and her husband Joe Attard, Wilhelmina and her husband Tony Sammut, Georgina and her husband Philip Grima, Joe and his wife Evelyn, and Carmen and her husband Graham Ayers, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. The funeral leaves Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital today for Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery chapel where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 8 a.m., followed by interment. The bride was attended by her daughter Ms AnnMarie Wismayer, Ms Amy Degiorgio and Ms Sharlene Balzan. Mrs Gloria Zampa and Andrew Palmier Gonzi, Dip. CII, witnessed the marriage ceremony. Nuptial Mass was celebrated by Canon Michael Agius, BA, Lic.D. at the parish church of the Assumption, Gudja. Fr Vince Micallef, OP, Fr Anthony Cilia, SJ, and Fr Charles Cini, SDB, concelebrated. The bride, radiant in a gold Chantilly lace wedding gown, was accompanied down the aisle by her father Geoffrey Pisani Bencini and was attended to by her cousin, Dr Anndrea Moran, LL.D. Dr Neville Gatt, LL.D., Dr Krista Pisani Bencini, LL.D., the bride’s sister, Dr David Gonzi, LL.D. and Mrs Mikela Smith La Rosa, the groom’s brother and sister, witnessed the marriage ceremony. Dr Trevor De Giorgio, LL.D. and Dr Antonio Ghio, LL.D., the bride’s brother-in-law, were best men. Master Thomas Gonzi, the groom’s nephew, was ringbearer. After nuptial Mass, the bride and bridegroom celebrated their marriage with their bridal party and numerous guests at an enchanting evening reception held on the lawn at the Inquisitor’s Palace, Girgenti. The couple are currently on honeymoon in Malaysia.

George Atkins, of San Pawl tat-Tarġa and residing at Pax et Bonum, Mosta, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her nephews and nieces, relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow, Wednesday, at 8.15 a.m. for Naxxar parish church where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 8.45 a.m., followed by interment at Naxxar Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza will be appreciated. The family would like to thank the Franciscan Sisters at Pax et Bonum for the care and dedication during the many years she spent there. Merciful Lord, grant her eternal rest.

CHAPELLE. On March 17, FRANCIS ANTHONY, Baron of San Giovanni, of St Julians, aged 77, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Anne, née Portanier, his beloved daughter Francesca, his in-laws, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves St James Capua Hospital, Sliema, tomorrow at 8 a.m. for Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish church, Balluta, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Siġ ġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

Bower. (Robert) Paul Charles, aged 86, peacefully at home in The Bahamas on January 25. Paul is survived by his wife Ericka, his sons Bobby Bower and Nigel Bower, his daughter Victoria Blackman-Aumonier, his sisters Anne Doyne-Ditmus, Margaret Kelly, Marianna Viscountess Monckton of Brenchley, Elizabeth Wainwright, Veronica Slocock, Mary Cox and Monica de Salis. A memorial service will be held in London on a date to be announced.

ARCHBISHOP EMANUEL GERADA

Archbishop Emanuel Gerada died this morning, aged 90.
Archbishop Gerada had been influential in mediating in the ongoing quarrel between the Church and the Malta Labour Party in the 1960s and for the signing of an agreement which ended the conflict, on Good Friday of 1969.
The Curia said in a statement that Bishop Gerada, who is from Zejtun, was consecrated titular bishop of Nomentum and auxiliary to Archbishop Michael Gonzi in 1967. A year later, he was appointed coadjutor Archbishop of Malta.
His appointment had been preceded by a career in the Holy See which he resumed in 1973.
He was apostolic nuncio to El Salvador, Guatemala, Pakistan and Ireland.
He retired in Malta in 1995.
Archbishop Gerada shall be lying in state from 4.30 to 7.30 p.m. on Monday at the Oratory, next to the Zejtun parish church and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, at St John's CoCathedral in Valletta.
The funeral mass is on Tuesday at 3 p.m. He will be buried in the family grave at San Girgor's Cemetery in Zejtun.

Former minister George Hyzler passes away

Former Minister for Health and Social Security George Hyzler, 85, has passed away.
Dr Hyzler, a long serving Nationalist MP and medical doctor from Qormi, also served as Acting President.
In a tribute to Dr Hyzler when he retired from public life two years ago, the Nationalist Party said that Dr Hyzler had served the prestigious role of Acting President with a sense of humility as well as dedication to his country, just as he served as an MP, minister and doctor.
Dr Hyzler was hailed as an honest, motivated and responsible man who always remained close to the people.
