The Maltese titles of "Illustrissimo" and "Nobile"

The Maltese titles of "Illustrissimo" and "Nobile" as regulated in 1725 ("Most Illustrious" and "Noble")

Owing to a great abuse which had crept in, of notaries and lawyers giving the style of "Nobile" and Illustrissimo" to many persons indiscriminately in public documents, the Grand Master de Vilhena issued a proclamation in the year 1725 in which he limited the use of this style to the following persons:

1. The Capitano della Verga "pro tempore"

2. The Magistrate of Notabile "pro tempore"

3. The Magistrate of Valletta "pro tempore"

4. Baron Antonio Inguanez and the Baroness Inguanez, his wife with remainder to their descendants.

5. Baron Fabrizio Testaferrata and his descendants.

6. Baroness Beatrice Testaferrata and her children, male and female and their husbands and legitimate descendants.

Any transgression, particularly by Lawyers, Notaries or "Attuari" (officers of the courts) were to be punished severely. (See "Bandi e Prammatiche dell' anno 1725 (fol.105)" also recorded in the Registry of H.M.'s Criminal Court of Malta)

Prammatica.

S.A.Serma. Padrone in virtu' della presente Prammatica perpetuo validura, volendo rimediare agli abusi, et inconvenienti da qualche tempo a questa parte introdotti in materia di titoli, ordina e comanda che da oggi in avanti nessun Avvocato, Notaio, et Attuario di questo nostro dominio, ardisca dare il Titolo di Illustrissimo, ne' di Nobile nelle scritture contratti, ed atti pubblici, a veruno dei Nostri Vassalli, eccetuato il Capitano della Verga pro tempore, e li due Magistrati delle nostre Citta' Notabile e Valletta, et il Milite Marc Antonio Inguanez, nostro Feudatorio, con la Baronessa Inguanez, sua consorte, e loro discendenti sotto, pena, in caso di contravenzione in quant' alli Avvocati di sospensione, ed in quanto alli Notari et Attuari della prescrizione dell' officio, et altre pene arbitrarie a detta A.Serema.

Die XX, mensis Aprilis 1725, data e pubta fuit et ego prasens Prammatica in locio pubblicio, solitis ert consuetis Hujus Civitatis Vallettae, Victoriosae, Senglea et Burmulae, sono Tubi, Populi parte congregata audiente , et intelligente, Actuario hujus Mag. Civ. Castelle legente, et Jose Vella Precone, alta et intelligibile voce preconizanti, unde:= S. Serma. Padrone, ordina e comanda che nella sudetta Prammaica, s'intendono pure eccetuati il-Barone di Cicciano, D. Fabrizio Testaferrata e la Baronessa del Gomerino D. Beatrice Cassia Testaferrata, sua madre, e tutti li suoi figli maschi e femmine, con loro mariti e legittimi discendenti. Oggi li 11 Maggio 1725. Ita referent.

N.B. 1. Marc' Antonio Inguanez, 14th Baron of Djar il-Bniet died without issue in 1760.

2. Fabrizio Testaferrata, 10th Baron of Castel Cicciano died in 1744, leaving 2 daughters from whom descend the various branches of the Sceberras D'Amico Inguanez family, the Sceberras Testaferrata family, and the (extinct) Marquises of Xorb l-Ghagin.

3. Beatrice Testaferrata, 9th Baroness of Castel Cicciano and 1st (joint) Baroness of Gomerino died in 1737 and left issue: the same Fabrizio (see above), Ercole Martino 2nd Baron of Gomerino (died 1748) from whom descend the various branches of the Testaferrata Moroni Viani and Testaferrata Abela families, Giovanna Fortunata from whom descend the various branches of the Perdicomati Bologna family and Eugenia Filippa from whom descend the various branches of the Bonici family.
