The Noble Family of Xara, later invested in the fief of Ghariescem et Tabia

This family was already listed as a noble family in “Descrittione di Malta” (1647). Moreover this landed family was later to be invested (1721-1797) in the fief of Ghariexem et Tabia, where they are styled as Baroni.

“Sino dall’ anno del 1400 e’ in molta stima, e credito questa famiglia in Malta, ricca non men di poderi, e schiavi, che d’huomini di valore, e con la quale si sono accopiate per matrimonio diverse dell’ alter nobili & antiche dell’ isola. Nell’ officio di Giurato della nostra Citta’ la ritroviamo concorre nel 1528 che l’esercito’ Nicolo’ Xara; fu’ questi figliuol di Luca, e nipote del primo Nicolo’, che visse prima del 1400 hebbe costui un’ altro figliuolo di nome Bartolomeo fratello di Luca suddetto & una figlia loro sorella nomata Margherita, che fu’ moglie di Andrea Manduca. Il secondo Nicolo’ fece l’acquisto del territorio nominata Ricupro, con la metà di quêllo di Bengemma ,e suo giardino per via di compera da D. Giovanna Gaetano, e Lanza l'anno 1547 come negl' atti di Notaro Antonio Occhipinti di PaIermo, e l’altra meta gli fu parimente venduta da' Signori Brancifortt in Sicilia. Il medesimo Nicoló prendette per isposa Agata figluola di Giulianö Cassia, e da quel matrimonio nacquero I seguenti. ……..Nel Regno di Castiglia, e luogo di Frexenal, ritroviamo ancora essevi l’istesso cognomen, leggendosi negl’ atti di questa Cancellaria.
