The Noble Family of Solimella, who held in fief the garden of Gomerino (pre-1318), also acknowledged as Milite in a letters patent relative to the Captaincy of Malta

This family is listed as a noble family in “Descrittione di Malta” (1647).

“Arnaldo de Solimella fu’ Capitano della nostra Citta’, & Isola nel 1315. Il medesimo vien nominato in un privilegio del Re’ Federico II col titolo di Milite, e di Castellano di Malta. Sirio di Solimella godeva in feudo dalli Regi di Sicilia il giardino de Gomerino, pero’ morendo senza legittimi eredi, vien devoluto alla regia Corte, & indi conceduto dal Re’ Federico fratello di Giacomo a’ Guglielmo Surdo.” (From Abela’s “Della Descrittione di Malta del Commendatore Abela” (1647))

 

THE GENEALOGY OF THE SOLIMELLA FAMILY:

1. Milite Siro di Solimella, Soldier and favourite of Kings of Sicily., a Sicilian Feudal Signore outside Palermo, (died C.1300-25), married Ilagio di Santa Sofia with issue.
1.1. Milite. Arnaldo di Solimella, Capitano della Citta di Notabile e Malta (1315), Milite Castellano di Malta, married Isabella Surdo dei Baroni di Gomerino., with issue.
1.1.1. Eleanore di Solimella, married Guglielmo di Castelli., Barone di Roccella in Sicily., with issue.
1.1.2. Zuna Solimella, married Simone La Barba.
1.1.3. Ninta Solimella, married Gaddo Cuzkeri.
1.1.4. Ilagia Solimella, married to Federico d'Antiochia, Conte di Loreto.
1.1.5. Siro di Solimella, granted the fief of Gomerino but as he died without legitimate heirs, that fief reverted to the Crown and it was subsequently granted to Guglielmo Surdo, dsp.l.

1.1.5.1. (illegitimate from Cecilia de Aragona) Eleanore Bastarda di Solimella, (later a Nun), Married to Milite Lanza Gatto of Palermo, Sometime Mistress to Prince Philip II of Tarento, Titular Emperor of Constantinople.

1.2. Ilagia Solimella, married Guglielmo Ragusa.
1.3. Sibilla Solimella, "Mistress" to Frederick III, King of Sicily., with issue. (See Aragona).
