David Bertram Ogilvy Freeman-Mitford, 2nd Baron
Redesdale |
Redesdale
was the father of the famous Mitford sisters. He was always known to his
children as |
'Farve'
(naturally, his wife was "Muv'). Although he was only semi-literate, he
made life |
interesting for his children, providing them
with mongooses as pets. A keen huntsman, he |
sometimes
used the girls as the prey, although they seemed to have enjoyed this. |
His
Lordship had no time for books, or for any form of education that might be
obtained from |
them. On one occasion, Lady Redesdale read Tess of the d'Urbervilles to
him. He was so upset |
by the fate of Tess that his wife explained to
him that the book was fiction. Redesdale was |
amazed. 'What! The damned fellow made it up?'
After that he never looked at another book |
until his daughter Nancy used him as a
character in some of her books. However, he was furious |
when he found out that he didn't have a part in
her biography of Madame de Pompadour. |
Of his seven children, the only son, Tom, was
the sole child to receive a formal education - the |
girls were not educated at all. Lady Redesdale
had some quirky ideas on child-raising, particularly |
with regard to diet and health. She insisted
that the children observe the ancient Jewish dietary |
laws. She inherited this belief from her
father, Thomas Gibson Bowles, MP for King's Lynn 1892- |
1906 (qv). She called for medical attention
only in extreme emergencies, but any medicines the |
doctor prescribed were poured down the sink
once the doctor had departed. |
